Position - Medical Billing Specialist
Position Summary:
The Billing Specialist I will actively participate to effectively communicate patient healthcare benefits and out of pocket expenses, especially as it pertains to services rendered at/by HMA and/or HATS. As a working member of Billing Operations, the Billing Specialist I is a key component of the HMA and HATS teams in providing information to help patients understand their financial obligations on both the front end and back end.
Essential Duties:
Prepares patient financial responsibility in accordance with HMA policy.
Reviews patient estimated financial responsibility with patient promptly.
Secures procedure/DME prepayment according to HMA policy.
Reviews insurance eligibility for New Patient appointments.
Verifies accurate and effective insurance plan information is listed in PMS.
Red-flags regarding patient s insurance are alerted to patient account and Patient Care Coordinator notified.
If BWC applicable, will obtain necessary billing information and create case to be attached to fee tickets for billing.
Identifies when ABN (for Medicare patients) or Financial Waiver is appropriate. Prepares form specific to date and service to be rendered. Address any questions patient has pertaining to form.
Communicates with patients regarding billing inquiries for e-Emedsys and Centricity.
Assist with basic office fee ticket overview, especially as it pertains to charge calculation.
Assist with MIPS data collection and provider reporting.
Complete all work with high level accuracy and attention to detail.
Maintain patient confidentiality.
Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrated understanding of coding concepts and principals Preferred
Demonstrated understanding of general billing processes Required
Demonstrated understanding of payer specific billing processes Preferred
Medical office experience Preferred
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with confidence Required
Ability to prioritize own work; ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team Required
Medical Coding and/or Billing Certification Preferred
Orthopedic billing/coding experience Preferred
Excellent Customer Service Required
Experience with Centricity Preferred
Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office & Windows Required
Advanced computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office & Windows Preferred
Physical Demands by Position:
This position regularly requires the employee to stand, walk, use hands, talk, and hear; walking and sitting may be for extended periods of time. Bending may be required for certain filing projects. May be required to lift up to 15 pounds. Specific vision requirements consist of close vision, distant vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
